The butterfly life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. After mating, adult female butterflies lay eggs on plant leaves. The butterfly larva, called a caterpillar, hatches and begins to eat the leaves of the plant. While in the larva stage, a caterpillar grows and sheds its exoskeleton several times.
